Sales of new homes lifted in the quarter after a surge in apartment sales in the month of June, according to the Housing Industry Association.
In the three months to June, new home sales increased 2 per cent, the survey of Australia's largest volume builders showed.
In the month of June, new home sales rose 1.2 per cent, driven by a 15.9 per cent spike in sales of multi-units.
Detached house sales fell 1 per cent in the month but rose 2.6 per cent over the quarter.
HIA chief economist Harley Dale said the results bode well for new residential construction.
"The new home building sector will provide a healthy contribution to broader economic growth in 2014-15," Dr Dale said.
"As the recovery enters its third year, the magnitude and duration of the current new home building upcycle is less certain than would usually be the case at this juncture."
In the June quarter, detached house sales rose by 0.4 per cent in NSW, 4.1 per cent in Victoria, 6.6 per cent in Queensland and 4.1 per cent in Western Australia, while detached house sales in South Australia fell 8.4 per cent.
